In 1896, Gotlieb Daimler presented the world’s first motorized truck, the two-cylinder “Phoenix”. The rear‑mounted engine delivered four horsepower with a displacement of 1.06 liters and drives the rear axle via a belt system. Coil springs protect the sensitive engine from vibrations, and the front axle is steered via chains. The driver sat on an elevated coach‑style bench, while the engine was positioned at the rear. Remarkably, Daimler had already integrated a principle still used today in heavy‑duty trucks: the planetary hub‑reduction axle.

Already in 1898, the next evolutionary step followed: the engine was moved beneath the driver’s seat and later shifted further forward ahead of the front axle, a layout that paved the way for higher performance and increased payload capacity. Daimler tested the vehicles under real‑world conditions at a brickwork before they entered series production. This marked the beginning of a success story that revolutionized international transport. As early as 1899, Daimler delivered the first trucks to England and France, where they prevailed over steam‑powered vehicles.

The international relevance of these vehicles became evident early on: at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, Daimler presented its vehicles to a global audience. As early as 1898, the company had taken the step into the US market by founding the Daimler Manufacturing Company in Long Island City, New York. This established a global presence at the turn of the century, a tradition that continues to this day.

As the inventor of the truck, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has not merely witnessed the evolution of transport; it has led it from the very beginning.

“Celebrating 130 years of trucking excellence is a testament to a legacy that has shaped the very foundations of the global transport industry. We are incredibly proud to stand as part of a brand whose innovation, resilience and commitment have driven progress for more than a century.  As Daimler Truck Southern Africa, we are honoured to carry this legacy forward in the Southern African region. We look ahead with confidence to many more years of advancing mobility and powering progress across Southern Africa.”  Maretha Gerber, President and Group CEO, DTSA.

Built on Innovation

From its earliest belt-driven engine to today’s intelligent, connected heavy-duty vehicles, the brand has consistently set benchmarks in durability, safety, efficiency and engineering excellence.

Throughout industrial revolutions, global expansion, and the rise of complex supply chains, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has remained at the forefront, pioneering diesel advancements, introducing groundbreaking safety systems, and continuously improving fuel efficiency.

Over the past three decades, the Mercedes-Benz Actros has consistently redefined what operators expect from a modern long‑haul truck. Each generation introduced technologies and features that were considered groundbreaking at the time, setting new industry benchmarks and influencing global truck development. Examples include the adoption of the Electronically Controlled Air Brake System and the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus, the introduction of automated transmission as standard, integrated safety assistance systems, and the pioneering MegaSpace cab. Other early driver‑assistance innovations included Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist.

Further milestones included the launch of Fleetboard, Daimler Truck’s in‑house premium telematics platform, followed by the addition of safety and efficiency systems such as the driver airbag, Stability Control Assist, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist with Proximity Control Assist, Roll Control Assist, Seat Belt Monitoring, and Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC). More recent generations continued this trajectory with advancements such as the Multimedia Cockpit, Active Brake Assist 6, and the integration of Mercedes‑Benz Uptime with Fleetboard services as standard.

While some of these technologies are now widely adopted across the industry, their introduction on the Mercedes-Benz Actros at the time marked significant steps forward in safety, efficiency, and smart fleet management.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz Actros family spans multiple generations. Together, they represent three decades of technological progress; from new drivetrain technologies and connected systems to comprehensive safety features. This evolution illustrates the significant role the Mercedes-Benz Actros plays in modernizing freight transport and how closely its history is linked to 130 years of innovation in truck development.

For 130 years, the focus has remained the same: engineering that serves customers.

Engineering for a Changing World

The transport and logistics industry is evolving rapidly. Rising operational costs, increasing safety demands and the global shift toward sustainability are reshaping the landscape.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks continues to lead this transition. From intelligent telematics and predictive maintenance systems to the development of alternative powertrains and zero-emission solutions, the brand is actively shaping the future of mobility.

A Trusted Partner in South Africa

In Southern Africa, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has built a reputation for reliability in some of the world’s toughest operating conditions and earned its claim to “Trucks you can trust”. Across long-haul routes, construction sites, mining operations and distribution networks, the three-pointed star remains a symbol of strength and dependability.

For fleet owners and operators, a truck is more than a vehicle; it is a business partner. It must deliver performance, uptime and long-term value. For generations, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has done exactly that.

Celebrating a Legacy. Driving the Future.

Reaching 130 years is more than marking time; it is recognising a legacy of resilience, leadership and relentless innovation. Few brands can say they invented their industry. Fewer still can say they have continuously redefined it.

As Mercedes-Benz Trucks celebrates 130 years, it honours a proud past while remaining firmly focused on what lies ahead. The future of trucking will continue to be shaped by the brand that started it all.
