Due to overwhelming support from the industry, the deadline for submission of nominations for the Women in Transport Awards has been extended to Friday 6 September 2019. This will allow more professionals to nominate organisations and individuals whom they believe have gone beyond the call of duty to provide exemplary service within the transport industry.

“With each success story shared by our previous winners, more women are inspired to explore the variety of fulfilling careers in this ever-evolving industry. Judges of the awards look for stories that are revelatory or have the potential to lead to positive change in the industry,” says Awards Manager, Amanda Bokleni.

Senior marine training facilitator from the Maritime School of Excellence at Transnet National Ports Authority, Khomotjo Mphahlele notes, “Despite strides being made by the IMO to get more women at sea, we still form only 2% of the world’s workforce at sea”.

Mari Pennanen, Business Development Director at DSM Corridor Group also added that, “These kind of awards mean recognition of women in the male dominated industry, where women are often belittled. This is a step forward to equal playfield, where professionalism is the keyword, and encourages women to carry on their duties keeping their heads high, regardless of the possible glass roof encountered.”

Mphahlele and Pennanen are judges for the awards; other esteemed representatives from across spectrum of industry heavyweights include the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Airports Company South Africa, Tshwane Women in Transport, Gautrain Management Agency and Standard Bank. The Women in Transport Awards are segmented into five categories to recognise, reward and celebrate the success women transforming the transport sector.
