Toyota Resilient in a tough market

New Hilux is once again the best-selling vehicle in SA

In August, 3 081 Hilux found new homes in SA proving its status as the country's favourite vehicle once more. Hilux together with the rest of the range pipped Toyota ahead of its nearest competitor by 2 661 units, to achieve 10 309 new car and truck sales for the month. This equates to an overall market share of 22.3%.

As Glenn Crompton, Vice President for Marketing at Toyota SA Motors points out, "The overall market decline by 9.5%, continues to concern the industry as a whole. With that being said, Toyota managed to increase its year-to-date market share from 19.4% (YTD August 2015) to 21.2% (YTD August 2016). This figure proves that in these tough and uncertain times, people buy the brands they know and trust and Toyota's value proposition speaks to that and more."

"Further evidence of the economic contraction, can be seen in the increased focus on small passenger vehicles. Noteworthy here is the ever-popular Etios, as well as the Aygo with 1 188 and 191 vehicles sold this month respectively," concludes Crompton.

In addition to Hilux, Toyota also led several other individual market segments in August with Fortuner (which once again posted an unassailable sales total of 1 235 units), Quantum (1 222) and RAV4 with 475, while Corolla and Corolla Quest are way out in front in the C segment with sales of 475 and 780 units respectively.

Additional notable Toyota volumes came from Avanza (415) and LandCruiser 200, which remains in high demand with 140 units sold.

Hino had a great sales month ending on 328 units. Hino 300 achieved a class leading 20% market share in the MCV segments, an improvement of 3% in July 2016. Hino 500 also increased its market share to 20% in August. In addition, Hino's overall market share improved by 2% in August to 14.6%, making August the second highest month this year.
