Scores injured in train collision

Driver critical

More than 100 people injured in Metrorail smash.

More than 100 people have been injured, about 20 of them seriously, in this morning's train accident west of Pretoria, according to SABC News.

The reports said the driver of one of the trains involved is critically injured. No deaths have been reported.

Emergency workers were removing trapped passengers from the wreckage between Kalafong and Cordelfos stations. Tshwane emergency services' Johan Pieterse said one of the trains was stationary on the track when it was hit by the other.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said their main concern was getting people out of the trains.

“At this present moment the accident has just happened and we do not have all the information of how people are injured.

"I can also confirm that it's part of our morning peak period now so we do have commuters on those trains and we are trying now to see what happened, but first we are prioritising people who are on the trains so that we can get them safely out of the trains,” Mofokeng said.
